The process of uncovering our Ikigai requires breaking the patterns of thought that covered it up in the first place.
One way to do this is the practice of embracing counterintuitive thoughts.
I know an artist who was trying to create a piece as a thank you for someone who had done her a favor.
She was trying to make something different and fun, trying to ‘think outside of the box’ if you will.
When we want to do breakthrough things we are told to color outside of the lines. I suggested she do this instead.
Color inside the lines; just be willing to move them.
Work within the boundary guidelines then nudge and stretch them.
Those will become the new lines and the difference will be amazing.
This is what she came up with…
Color inside the lines; just be willing to move them.
What does this say to you?
What thoughts does this spark?
What connection does this make to Ikigai?
I always have a Seth Godin quote when it comes to art and creativity. “Artists think along the edges of the box, because that's where things get done. That's where the audience is, that's where the means of production are available, and that's where you can make an impact.”
First of all, I love the painting! Such stunning colours!
'Color inside the lines; just be willing to move them.' - I will keep this sentence close to my heart. It is quite a hard thing to do in reality - especially since moving the lines sometimes could mean having an impact on other people. However, moving the lines is better than forever colouring within the lines, and expecting a different outcome.
