The process of uncovering our Ikigai requires breaking the patterns of thought that covered it up in the first place.
One way to do this is the practice of embracing counterintuitive thoughts.
I know an artist who was trying to create a piece as a thank you to someone who had done her a favor.
She was trying to make something different and fun, trying to ‘think outside of the box’ if you will.
When we want to do breakthrough things, we are told to color outside of the lines. I suggested she do this instead.
audio narration by David Marlow
Color inside the lines; just be willing to move them.
Work within the boundary guidelines then nudge and stretch them.
Those will become the new lines and the difference will be amazing.
This is what she came up with…
🌀 Fun note, the original artwork is that of my lovely wife Alicia
Color inside the lines; just be willing to move them.
What does this say to you?
What thoughts does this spark?
What connection does this make to Ikigai?
Today I was half listening to a Hallmark movie my wife had on. It had a great line.
Two people were told to work together. One was to help the other color inside the lines, while the person being taught to color inside the lines was to help the other to use all the colors in her box.
I think both of these things in conjuction with creatively moving the lines is a full picture of creativity.
You're opening line is gold, David. And this art is striking. It got me thinking before I even started reading what you had associated it with, which makes it even more valuable.
Drawing out arcs to where they think they will take us is one thing. Copying parallel, shifting weights and colors, will start to craft a life we didn't expect.
