Yesterday I mentioned my love for good poetry and cartoons because, in abstraction, they say something in a short space which is so compelling that it charges your creativity and imagination.
It is sense-making in a marvelous form.
Since dozens of you messaged me that you loved the cartoon and since weekends are famous for conjuring up future scenarios of doom, I thought this cartoon was perfect for today.
It is easy to spend both days of the weekend time-traveling to next week's problems.
Here is a practice I implemented during a particularly tough time in my work life.
On Friday afternoons, I would tell myself that there was no guarantee of Monday, and I was only allowed to think about things that mattered over the weekend.
No email checking, planning, or pondering anything more than the present moment or a weekend event.
I noticed an immediate lowering of stress over my weekends. Instead of worrying, I was more present with my family. My focus centered on things that mattered at the moment.
What if, instead of worrying, you imagined Monday was not guaranteed?
Sometimes it is hard to be present, especially if there are pending things waiting for us at work.
How much more present could you become by approaching this weekend as the only guarantee you have?
How would you behave differently if these two days might be your last chance to spend time with your friends and loved ones?
What memories or experiences do you want to leave them with?
This weekend try using that mindset and observe how you feel on Monday.
Unless, of course, you like future scenarios of doom. 😉
