Awesome evocative question.
First thought that came to mind about his view is that the first he was witnessing greed and selfishness. The second he was witnessing selflessness and the strength of the human spirit to bring about change for the good.
First thing I think is 20 years of age. The prospective changes from what we've seen we've been able to accomplish ourselves, compared to what we may have observed from less effective people around us.
