Focus on This Day
My focus was on and in the future for much of my early life. It is what society often pushes us to do and what my less than optimal circumstances encouraged at the time.
My days were filled with constant churn and striving, working toward that next thing.
It was exhausting.
My focus now is on the present, and while I still get things done and lay the groundwork for the future, I’m happier.
David Griffin has some thoughts that speak to why that may be true. See if they speak to you.
Opportunity always comes with a deadline. Everything in this life is temporary.
Everyone knows this, but how the knowledge affects us depends on which side of the timeline we give our attention.
Focus on the ending, and we live in fear. We mourn a loss before the loss happens.
But focus on this day, and life changes. We see our blessing more clearly. We make the most of opportunity, and in the process, develop ourselves into a person who’s ready for the changes life has in store.
Reflection:
What opportunity deadlines do you have in your life?
Are you making the most of them?
How does focusing on now make the most of opportunities and support the personal development we need to embrace those opportunities?
"how knowledge affects us depends on which side of the timeline we give our attention"
Profound.
I've always operated in terms of windows. The understanding that a time might be now, and it is limited.
I also appreciate this point about mourning " a loss before the loss happens".
