Winter As a Season of Rest.
A friend of mine owns a splendid house on a lake. I’ve spent many a summer day there enjoying time by the water.
His family loves water sports, and you can find him racing around the lake on most weekends in his boat.
He’s also a project guy who always has something he is building or improving around the house, like the new fire pit he put in this year.
Life at the lake house revolved around summer, so it surprised me to hear him say he was glad summer was over.
“I’m looking forward to having a few months to rest on the weekends.”
While he enjoyed life on the lake, it was busy, and there was never a weekend where he could justify doing nothing.
He explained that he had to get the dock put in the lake in spring, and repairs were almost always needed. The boat was the same thing, take it out of storage and ready it for the water.
Having friends like me over was fun; it always came with planning and grocery shopping.
There were chores like collecting and stacking wood for the beautiful fires. On and on went the list of things he needed to do.
“Don’t get me wrong; I love summer. By the end, I’m ready for a season where I can drink hot chocolate and read a book on the weekend.”
Many people in Wisconsin dread winter. Instead of dreading it, he saw winter as a welcomed time of rest.
Applying that lens has helped me appreciate winter more as well as other ‘seasons’ of life.
