Play is the Thing!
Sometimes I run for the sake of running itself. Occasionally I don’t even wear my watch or record the time. Running for the joy of running.
That's a form of play.
We need more play in our lives.
While a big part of my career was spent in Continuous Improvement, I don’t see efficiency and productivity as the only goals in life.
In fact, they are not meant to be the primary goals at all.
Eliminating wasteful practices is more about not doing the wrong things so you can spend time doing the right things.
It’s not about speeding life up but rather creating time and energy with which to enjoy life by slowing things down.
We can embrace our Ikigai by living a life of joy, improvisation, and laughter.
One way to do that is to maximize our energy through rest, regeneration, and relaxation.
In other words, through the flow that comes from play.
🌀 When was the last time you did something for the sake of doing it? No agenda, goal, or thought of achievement. Doing something for the fun of doing it?
Beautiful question David. Just yesterday I went outside and played "friendly" football with my 10 yo son. We were laughing, running, diving on the ground (well him, me I more took a knee) but it was play with no agenda or rules and I LOVED every second of it.
