Even if the objective was the pursuit itself, I still don't agree with it. I wonder if, because of the context of the times, even basic happiness was not considered a valid entitlement.
Absolutely the best commentary I've heard on joy v.s. happiness! *while I am in pursuit of both - joy is where strength resides. 😊 Thank you for sharing your joy journey.❤
I would say David this is one of your most deepest discussion and shall I say most meaningful and joyful for me and hope others. I like that you hit on the differences on Happiness and Joy...critical differences as you eloquently pointed out and I agree. <Like the note on Joy being more from the inner self with gratitude and grace associated with it...um. So yes set priorities in ones life with Faith, Family/Real Friends at the forefront and all else like work after that. When you start to extrapolate on Ikigai getting close to ones soul and inner connections with the Divine then we can have that enlightened dialogue which overlays all into the Light!
I was just talking with someone two days ago about the inherent problems with the pursuit of happiness. As long as we are conscious of not being happy, we will never find happiness. Happiness is a byproduct of other purposeful actions in our life. I have found that joy is a longer term less disturbed arc that we cultivate, especially through gratitude and acceptance.
It would be interesting to research just what Jefferson meant and why he included the pursuit in his writing. I don't think he meant it to be the be all end all as much as a framework for living how we choose.

Faith, Family/Real Friends...that's what it is all about.
