Great reflections.... funny to see you not pronounce the word of the day, makes you authentically human...yes even for an Irishman ;) Other things that caught my ear was I too have used a shaving product since high school. Barbasol works for me using a twin blade razor from Gillette. When the system was no more, I did buy blades from Amazon for a great price and when I use up, sure I may try another. Never did try an electric razor but continued good luck. I did like that you walked even if not able to run and approach from another way. I agree it is important to see multiple sides of a view to observe lessons that nature has to offer...so many! I did shine shoes for spare $ when I was a young kid. I lived next to a major airport and use to go on Saturdays with a friend. Best shine I ever gave was to a military guy. I remembered because I spent a lot of time getting it just right. Of course, he tried to give me some advice on what "he liked" and gave me a dime and no extra. I didn't appreciate it, but also didn't get so upset but learned from it. My going rate was $25 in those days. Any $ I got went to over-priced hot dog and kept what was left. Yes, a lot of lessons.... good and not so good on dealing with people and also myself. Thanks, Dave, for the stories and insights!
Very cool that your new solution improved the shave!!
I have a guess about the habitual ruts we fall into (but it’s only a guess). When we create a routine, the action and all its various steps go into a part of the brain that is essentially unconscious, thereby allowing our conscious brain to daydream, or ponder something else that we choose.
I am guessing that we enjoy daydreaming more than routine, so as beings, we create routines to allow for the joy of being able to think about something else. 🤗
And, btw, I really dislike when companies stop making a great product 🤭
As far as the company goes it makes zero sense. it was $2 a bottle and people are paying $10 for it on eBay. Clearly, there is still a demand so what gives? At any rate, I like your pondering about routine. Habits and routines serve us until they don't. it can be a delicate balance sometimes. I guess that's why life 'shakes' the box once in a while for us whether we like it or not.
Well, it’s interesting how change comes when something disrupts our usual routine or environment.
As of yesterday millions will be encountering large scale disruption—that is what happens when an unprovoked tariff war is started. There are many products that will soon be unavailable, and jobs that will be lost, perhaps permanently.
And then there is the Climate Emergency whose effects are non-linear. Things seem fine until a storm washes your home away, or fire sweeps down from the hills and destroys everything you own.
I am concerned quite a bit with the systemic disruptions we are experiencing and how to navigate a way through, if that is even possible.
It is understandable to be concerned. At such times I encourage myself by remembering something from Paul Romer. I hope it encourages you as well.
"Every generation has perceived the limits to growth that finite resources and undesirable side effects would pose if no new recipes or ideas were discovered. And every generation has underestimated the potential for finding new recipes and ideas. We consistently fail to grasp how many new ideas remain to be discovered."
I have only a tenuous connection with groundhogs day because I also only have a tenuous connection with groundhogs.
They used to visit my backyard to eat my lawn.
( My “avatar“ is a photograph of one of those groundhogs. And one of my favorite poems, of those I’ve written, is about a groundhog. )
But I think either the coyotes got them or they were poisoned by neighbors who did not appreciate the adorable little varmints.
Such a fun comment. Thanks for sharing your story (and profile pic backstory), Bob!

Great all of it
