Interestingly enough, I think the only time I ever had a bird poop on me was when I was on my way to be the best man in my friend's wedding, already dressed. Thankfully, baby wipes work pretty well on a tux.
As to "default" - I wonder if people are often thinking of the definition "assume a preset value or take a preselected action unless otherwise instructed", returning unintentionally to an original position. In either case, not very purposeful, and no growth is possible unless it is to reevaluate a new strategy. In that case, we had better not stay there very long.
...there’s always something to be thankful for.
A childhood poem comes to mind:
“Birdie, birdie in the sky,
Why did you poop in my eye?
I don’t care,
I don’t cry;
I’m just glad elephants can’t fly.”
Funny and insightful at the same time. Indeed, if there were an elephant in my maple tree I might have displayed a very different reaction.

Baby wipes work well on a tux. Good to know. 😉
No doubt the 'default' you speak of is a part of this and apart of the problem. Especially when the rules or circumstances change.
We go on autopilot too long only to wake up when we are about to hit the mountain.
