I had a similar experience while stationed in Montana, but I actually did try hunting. Thankfully, it was with a friend who had a deep respect for animals and their role in the ecosystem, so we said a blessing over the deer we shot and did the entire process of converting the deer into packaged meat ourselves.

Not for me in the long term, but a good experience of discomfort and learning.

Thanks for your reflections. It's amazing how we become the thing we hoped would already exist in a place that clearly needs us to be who we are.

I've been hunting though it was many years ago. I love the approach you describe. I would say most hunters here in Wisconsin have a similar connection to nature and the animals as parts of the whole. An awful lot of land stays undeveloped because people want to have that experience every year. It is a net good thing. Thank you for sharing your story and experience.

Oh I was also with GE Medicals when I started my career. I used to be in the team that was responsible to contact FE and connect with doctors. Just reading your story made me feel nostalgic. Even we used to take fag breaks but to go and have chai !!

It sounds like my work at the Online Center. I was an FE and then moved to Milwaukee to be a support engineer.

Great story David and lessons on so many levels! First don’t assume anything on questions just answer them. Next be uncomfortable with new surroundings which allowed you credibility with others also from outside the area. Smoking well that’s a personal story which let’s say cigarettes will never touch my mouth again. Once as a child was enough 😏 enjoy your Thanksgiving and keep spreading the news!

To be clear, I didn't actually take up smoking. 😉 We non-smokers got tired of covering for the smokers when they took breaks and decided to join them...only in taking a break.

That makes sense and would have been nice to get some health incentives to get those smokers off the pace and more of giving up a very bad habit.

If standing outside in a Wisconsin winter doesn't help them break the habit I don't know what will. 🤣
